"There is nothing ... nothing more exciting than seeing the magnificent physiques, glossy coats and the cavorting of spirited and beautiful thoroughbred horses as they prance out onto the race track with their jockeys sitting astride them. The jockeys all neatly tucked up in their stirrups and dressed in their brightly coloured silks which flutter lightly in the breeze.... they line up, tension running high ... and then, they're off .. the thundering sound of hooves as they leave the gate and race out onto the track, muscles rippling, the horses limbs extending to the full, nostrils flaring, deep chests pumping like bellows, horse and jockey in complete unison both totally focused, focused on one goal .. winning ! and then, Yes, Yes, we have a winner ! The roaring cheers of the crowd, the anxious and then triumphant yells of the betting winners. The Winners circle awaits the victorious pair, garlands of flowers, acclaim and rich winnings, the joyous smiles of the horses proud owners with lots of well deserved pampering and reward in store for the winning horse and it's jockey. Welcome to the Exhilarating world of horse racing" - Tracey Mae
Horse racing is sometimes referred to as pari-mutuel betting for a number of reasons because each person???s bets are put in a pool, the race track taxes the pool for its cut or share and all the monies and payout odds are given at the end of the race. Intuitively because the betting odds are not figured until after the race, it doesn???t make sense that the odds be available before a person places their bet. However, they are. These odds are not set in stone but are best pre-race guesses. Because they are only approximate odds, they will change, as the race gets closer to it's start. Successful horse racing betting requires a certain amount of skill. It does not involve picking and playing a horse "willy-nilly" and hoping for the best, although there is nothing that stops you from doing this either!
Horse Race betting and play can be made at the racetrack, at off-track
betting locations, and through other means such as sports betting
sites that are available online on the internet.

Betting and placing a bet and playing on horse racing has been an integral part of the horse virtually since its domestic beginnings which dates back to many thousands of years ago.
Horse Racing is an ancient sport. Its origins date back to about 4500 BC and started amongst the nomadic tribesmen of Eurasia (who it is believed were the first to have first domesticated the horse).
Horse racing was also an important part of the Greek Olympics in the form of chariot races and individual racing as well as during the Roman Empire.
There have been many famous modern films made since about these ancient times and horse and chariot racing with movie epics such as "Ben Hur".
The beginnings of modern horse racing and thoroughbreds started in the 12th Century when the English Knights came back from the Crusades with the lighter, swifter and finely boned Arab breed. These Stallions were bred with the sturdier and heavier English mares to produce the breed that we know today as the "thoroughbred". The British nobility would take a "game of chance" and place a bet on these speedy horses in private wagers to see whose horse was the fastest.
During the era of Queen Anne (1702-1714) horse racing began to become a professional sport. Race courses sprang up all over Britain and increasingly large "purses' made the breeding and owning of these horses more profitable and encouraged more to follow. In the 1750's the racing elite of the day met and formed the "Jockey Club" a governing body which still exists to this day.
The "Jockey Club " also started to regulate the breeding of these horses, and in 1791 James Weatherby published a breeders book to which there were three foundation horses and today every thoroughbred can be traced back to one of these three stallions or sires. These stallions were the Byerley Turk (foaled c.1679), the Darley Arabian (foaled c.1700) and the Godolphin Arabian (foaled c.1724).
Thoroughbred horses were exported all over the world and now exist and compete in races everywhere in the World today.
