Famous Gamblers

FAMOUS GAMBLERS … there are many tales and legends concerning famous gamblers, some of them taking us back centuries. Many of these are strange though true, whilst others are somewhat questionable!

Famous Gamblers of the Roman EraPlay Casino Games at Europa Casino

We start off with the famous gamblers Emperor Julius Caesar and his friend Mark Anthony, who were avid gamblers and spent much time betting on cockfights and playing dice.

Emperor Claudius is a famous gambler from the Roman Era. Another of the famous gamblers or the roman era  Emperor Claudius, was an obsessive dice player who even had the inside of his carriage reconstructed so that he could play dice while travelling. The Roman dramatist, Seneca, did a skit on the death of Claudius; showing him in hell forever condemned to shaking dice in a cup without a bottom!

Two other famous gamblers and Roman emperors who were equally obsessive and that loved to gamble were Nero and Caligula who bet sums of up to 400 000 sesterii (+-$50,000) on a single throw of the dice. Caligula recouped his losses by arresting or executing his wealthy subjects and confiscating their wealth!

Henry VII was well-known for his love of gambling, a pastime at odds with his image as a miserly king. Today, we can look at the carefully-maintained Privy Purse Accounts to see the amounts Tudor royalty lost at cards. Though even royalty was not supposed to gamble during certain religious holidays, neither Henry VII, or his son obeyed that rule. Henry VIII was particularly bad at the game primero.

King Henry V111 of England rivalled the Roman Emperors in gambling addiction and excesses by actually managing to lose the church bells from the City of London!!

Famous Gamblers of the Wild West

Many famous gamblers are found amongst the legends of the Wild West and not least was the Marshall Wyatt Earp. He was the part owner of a gambling house in tombstone, Arizona and his card playing skills considerably boosted his marshal’s salary.

Wild Bill Hickok one of the most famous gamblers of all time, actually died while playing poker in a saloon in Deadwood, Dakota. He was shot in the head from behind whilst he was sitting with his back to the door by an assassin hired by crooked gamblers. They were afraid that his being elected sheriff would put paid to their illegal dealings. At the time of his death, Hickok was holding a pair of eights and a pair of aces. This hand has since famously been known as the “dead man’s hand”.

Calamity Jane a famous gambler is pictured here with a gun
Famous Gamblers – Calamity Jane with gun

The following famous gamblers all knew each other from the boom towns: Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Poker Alice, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, Lottie Deno, Bob Ford, Moustache Maude, Doc Holliday, and Big Nose Kate Elder. The number of movies that have been made about this bunch is amazing. Over Fifty-five of America’s best-known actors have played both Wyatt and Doc.

Poker Alice shot one man who accused a boyfriend of cheating and killed another later. Lottie killed a man who swindled her with both barrels of a shotgun. Doc killed one man who grabbed his chips, and another who looked at the discards.

Most of the famous lady gamblers of this era used high fashion as a trademark, all carried guns, and used them! Lottie Deno was the role model used for Miss Kitty in the movie Gun smoke. Elizabeth Taylor played Poker Alice and Doris Day is just one of many to play Calamity Jane.

Doc, Wyatt, Bat, and Luke Short were all famous gamblers, gunfighters, gambling house owners and close friends. Several of these gamblers were involved in pimping, including Wyatt Earp and his brother, Poker Alice, and Moustache Maude. Wild Bill’s pal Calamity Jane was a famous gambler and poker player and sometime whore. Doc’s long-term lady, Kate Elder, was a whore. When Doc killed someone and was jailed, Kate set fire to the jail and then held the jailers at bay with pistols in both hands.

Famous Gamblers of 18th – 20th Century

By contrast, we look at the elegant salons of 18th century European society and here we find the famous lover, Casanova, who was also a famous gambler. In fact gambling was his living! He won more than he lost, plunging from riches into poverty regularly throughout his gaming career.

Beau Brummel a famous gambler
Beau Brummel a famous gambler

The famous UK gambler and dandy, Beau Brummel, belonged to Whites and Brooks London gaming clubs where he regularly gambled for high stakes. Another member of Whites Club named Bligh was a suicidal schizophrenic and was playing at the same table as Beau Brummel one evening. Brummel after losing 1000 guineas pretended to be absolutely distraught and called to the waiter to bring him a candlestick and a pistol so that he could “light his way to death.” Bligh calmly took two loaded pistols from his coat pockets. He presented them to Brummel saying,” Mr. Brummel, if you are really serious to put a period to your existence, I am happy to offer you the means without you troubling the waiter!”

Brummel’s gambling eventually ruined him financially. At the age of 62 he died in a madhouse. The change in his fortunes was blamed on the loss of his lucky charm (a coin with a hole in it) which he had given out in error to a hackney coachman.

The wealthy British store owner, Gordon Selfridge, was not an addicted gambler himself, but his protégés, the famous gamblers, the Dolly Sisters, were true gamblers – in every sense of the word, mostly using Selfridge’s money!

The Dolly SistersThe Dolly sisters were cabaret artists and were seen performing by Selfridge who then invited them to visit him at his villa in Deauville. Their visit lasted nearly a quarter of a century during which time these two famous gamblers managed to gamble away $8,000,000.00 of his fortune! On one particular occasion, whilst playing a game of baccarat, they lost the equivalent of 10.000 pounds. Selfridge sent them diamonds “to compensate for your losses my darlings!” However his money was not limitless, and at the age of 83 he went bankrupt.

Nick the Greek Danadalos, another famous gambler also known as the “King of Gamblers” won more than $50,000,000.00 during his lifetime. In 1949, in a Las Vegas casino, he played poker against his arch rival Johnny Moss. The game lasted five months with breaks every four or five days for sleep. At one point during the game, Nick won $1,000,000.00 in a single hand but eventually fortune smiled on Moss and Nick reportedly lost$2,000,000.00. Nick’s reign as “King of the Gamblers” was over and he ended his playing days in Californian bars playing $5 poker games.

Perhaps the most well-known names in 20th Century European Gambling circuit belonged to a group known as “The Greek Syndicate”. The group consisted of five members: Eli Eliopulo (Greek), Nicolas Zographos (Greek), Athanase Vagliano (Greek), Zanet Couyoumdjian (Armenian), and Francois Andre (French). They regularly played against some of the World’s richest men, such as the Aga Kahn, the Baron Henri de Rothschild and the ex-king Farouk of Egypt.

Each member of the syndicate ended his gambling career far richer that when he started out and this was largely due to the gambling abilities of Nico Zographos. He mastered the mathematics of gambling and combined with his incredible memory (he could remember every single playing card throughout a game of baccarat) he made a formidable opponent.

Although all the original famous gambler members of the syndicate are now dead, it still exists today and still achieves more consistent success than any comparable group in Europe.

Doyle Brunson – “The Godfather of Poker”

English: Doyle Brunson in 2010
Doyle Brunson – Poker Legend

Doyle Brunson, “The Godfather of Poker” and Poker legend is now 78, he was born on the 10th August, 1933 and has been playing poker professionally for over 50 years.  He is a two-time World Series of Poker Main Event champion, a Poker Hall of Fame inductee, and the author of several books on poker.

Doyle Brunson was born in Longworth, Fisher County, Texas, and a town with a population of about 100, and was one of three children. A promising athlete, Doyle was part of the All-State Texas basketball team, and practiced the one-mile run to keep him-self in shape in the off-season.

A knee injury ended his basketball playing days, when he broke his leg in two places and was in a cast for two years, his leg never healed properly and he still uses a crutch today. With this twist of fate Brunson changed his focus from athletics to education; Doyle attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in 1954 and a master’s degree in administrative education the following year.

Brunson had started playing poker before his injury, he would play five-card draw and found it “easy.” He played more often after being injured and his winnings paid for his living expenses.

After graduating, he took a job as a business machine salesman, on his first day at his new job, he was invited to play in a seven-card stud game and earned over a month’s salary in less than three hours!  He soon left his job to become became a professional poker player.

Brunson married his wife Louise in August 1962.  Louise fell pregnant but then that same year life took a turn for the worse in when he was diagnosed with cancer and given a mere three months left to live. Doyle Brunson beat the odds and recovered with no trace of cancer to be found.

10 Time WSOP Champion – Brunson was the first player to earn $1 million in poker tournaments and has won ten World Series of Poker bracelets throughout his career; he tied with Johnny Chan for second all-time, three behind Phil Hellmuth’s thirteen. He is also one of only four players to have won the Main Event at the World Series of Poker multiple times, which he did in 1976 and 1977. Doyle Brunson is one of only two players, along with Bill Boyd, to have won bracelets at the WSOP in four consecutive years. In addition to this, he is the first of five players to win both the WSOP Main Event and a World Poker Tour title. In 2006, Bluff Magazine voted Doyle the most influential force in the world of poker.

He was the star of the infamous band of traveling poker sharks, the Texas Rounders. Brunson began by playing in illegal games on Exchange Street, Fort Worth, Texas with a friend named Dwayne Hamilton. Eventually, they began traveling around Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, playing in bigger poker games, and meeting fellow professionals Amarillo Slim and Sailor Roberts. The illegal games Doyle Brunson played in during this time were usually run by criminals who were often members of organized crime, so rules were not always enforced. Brunson has admitted to having a gun pulled on him several times and that he was also robbed and beaten up.

Brunson finally settled in Las Vegas. He has been a regular player at the World Series of Poker, since its creation in 1970. He has played in the Main Event nearly every year since then.

Brunson authored the book “Super System”, which is considered to be one of the most authoritative books on poker.
Originally self-published in 1978, Super System was the book that transformed poker by giving ordinary players insight into the way that professionals such as Brunson played and won, so much so that Brunson believes that it has cost him a lot of money. An updated revision, Super System 2, was published in 2004. Brunson is also the author of “Poker Wisdom of a Champion”, originally published according to Doyle by Lyle Stuart in 1984.

Brunson continues to play in the biggest poker games in the world, including a $4000/$8000 limit mixed poker game in “Bobby’s Room” at the Bellagio. He also still plays in many of the biggest poker tournaments around the world. He won his ninth gold bracelet in a mixed games event in 2003, and in 2004, he finished 53rd (in a field of 2,576) in the No Limit Texas hold ’em Championship event. He won the Legends of Poker World Poker Tour event in 2004 (garnering him a $1.1 million prize) and finished fourth in the WPT’s first championship event. Early in the morning on July 1, 2005, less than a week after Chan had won his 10th gold bracelet, setting a new record; Brunson tied the record at the 2005 WSOP. He is currently three bracelets behind Phil Hellmuth, who earned his 13th bracelet at the 2012 World Series of Poker Europe.

Doyle Brunson’s nickname, “Texas Dolly,”came from a mistake made by Jimmy Snyder. Snyder was supposed to announce Doyle Brunson as “Texas Doyle,” but incorrectly pronounced “Doyle” and said “Texas Dolly”  … this slip of the tongue stuck and now many of Doyle’s poker colleagues simply call him “Dolly”.

As of 2011, his total live tournament winnings exceed $6,000,000. He has totalled $2,945,053 in earnings from his 34 cashes at the WSOP.

Doyle recently told the History Channel, “to be a successful gambler you have to have a complete disregard for money, that and a keen eye for what´s happening in the eyes of the other guy.”

Brunson is the King of poker. He virtually created the phenomenon that is Texas Hold´em and has become the most popular poker game played today. He paved the way for a sport that was once considered only to be played by gangsters and criminals. Poker today has become a professional sport is now played by many prominent leaders and business men all over the world. In the World of professional poker, Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson is the “Godfather of Poker” and it’s King.

No Soccer
No Soccer (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

SOCCER BANNED ?  YOU BET IT WAS  …… Most modern versions of  Soccer or football are believed to have originated from England in the twelfth century. The game became so popular in England that the kings of that time namely King Henry II and King Henry IV actually banned it !

These kings believed that soccer was taking away interest from the traditional sports of England, such as fencing and archery.

These two kings were actually wise beyond thier time as Soccer has become the most popular sport in the world.

You have Players that are loved, teams that are revered, goals, dribbles and sprints. Huge crowds, chanting, cheering, singing and yes, sometimes even fighting. Mind boggling sums of money change hands for the purchase of Soccer Clubs, Soccer Players, Soccer Sponsorships and Soccer bets.

Soccer bets and betting

Because so many people play and watch soccer, placing a soccer bet or betting on this sport has become the “norm”, with just about every sportsbooks in the world offering bets on soccer and it’s matches. A Soccer bet can be tricky as there is a ton of competition out there and many experienced soccer bettors. Successfully betting on soccer is an exciting and challenging game. There are a lot of things that you need to account for such as …Players and subsequently, teams, thier age, will they get hurt or are they hurt and will they have a bad day, what is thier current form etc, which makes it difficult to always predict and choose the correct winner, the number of goals that will be scored or whatever else your soccer bet is going to be. Thankfully today soccer is not banned and enjoys the highest of status in the world of sport. This is the huge passion of the “The world of Soccer”.

Horse Racing Legend – Red Rum and Ginger McCain – this is their story.

Red Rum and Ginger McCain
Red Rum and Ginger McCain – Horse Racing legends

Red Rum and Ginger McCain, a horse racing legend and this is their story.

A horse and his trainer, with fiery names and the colouring and personalities to match, this duo forged a blazing trail through the world of horse racing that is unmatched to this day.

Red Rum was born on the 3rd May 1965. His dam was Mared, who was known to be slightly moggy and his Sire was Quorum.  Red Rum, a bay gelding was of average size and he was bred to be a one-mile sprinter.

Ginger McCain was born on the 21st September 1930. Ginger was a second-hand car dealer and taxi driver that had a small stable outfit at the back of his second-hand car lot in Southport. He famously trained his horses on the extensive sands of Southport beach.Red Rum at the Grand National

The Grand National at Aintree, Liverpool, England is a world-famous steeplechase race and has been referred to as “the ultimate test of a horse’s courage”.

Red Rum started his career running in cheap races as a sprinter and was passed from training yard to training yard until he was eventually bought by Ginger McCain for owner Noel La Mare for 6000 Guineas at the Doncaster August sales in 1972.

On offloading Red Rum, Ginger noticed when he trotted the horse that he seemed lame. Red Rum had developed a debilitating bone disease called pedal osteitis.  Luck and fate stepped in here as Red Rum had arrived at perhaps the only training stable in the country where training took place on a beach. Ginger as a young lad had noticed the beneficial effects that the water had on the shrimper’s horses.

Red Rum on the Southport Beach
Red Rum on the Southport Beach

Ginger put Red Rum into the icy salt waters of the Irish Sea, these waters worked their therapeutic magic and miraculously Red Rum came trotting out healed and sound. Red Rum went on to win his first five races for Ginger and become a horse racing legend.

Red Rum a now famous horse ran into the history books and became a champion and celebrity when he achieved the un-matched and historic treble win, winning the Grand National in 1973, 1974 and 1977 and in the two years in-between namely 1975 and 1976 he came second  both times. Red Rum was to run again in the 1978 Grand National but was withdrawn a day before this epic event as he had developed a hairline fracture in his leg. Red Rum was retired from racing and the bay gelding who was placed in 52 of his 100 races embarked on his second career as a travelling celebrity.

Red Rum was voted sporting personality of the year in 1977, he appeared on TV, he switched on the Blackpool lights, opened pubs and supermarkets and lead the Grand National parade for many more years.  Red Rum became a limited company and his likeness graced playing cards, mugs, posters, models, paintings and puzzles. Several books have been written about Red Rum by his trainer, sculptor, jockeys and also author Ivor Herbert. In 1975, a song entitled “Red Rum” was issued as a tribute to him by a group named Chaser. A children’s story about Red Rum’s life was written by Christine Pemberton. In 2010, the name of the Aintree racecourse bar, originally called “The Sefton” was changed to “The Red Rum”.

Red Rum died at the age of 30 on the 18th October 1995. His death made the front pages of the national newspapers. Red Rum is buried at the winning post of Aintree racecourse with his head facing the winning post.  The epitaph on his grave reads … “Respect this place, this hallowed ground, a legend here, his rest has found, his feet would fly our spirits soar he earned our love for evermore”

Red Rum the horse racing legend and arguably one of the most famous horses in the world, has statues both at Aintree Racecourse and in Southport

Ginger famously said “Everyone called me a one-horse trainer but it never bothered me. I just used to laugh and say ‘yeah, but what a bloody good job I made of the one I had’.”

Ginger has also said of Red Rum “He had a charisma all of his own. He loved people and people loved him. The old lad was magic”.

The colourful and out-spoken racehorse trainer, Ginger McCain won the Grand National one more time at the age of 73  with Amberleigh House in 2004. After the race he quietly made his way over to the grave of his beloved Red Rum, triple National winner, buried alongside the winning post.
He later joked that Rummy, who had died nine years earlier, had spoken to him about his latest win.
He quipped “Red Rum said to me ‘let him win it twice more and he might be nearly as good as me’ “.

McCain has said “I’m no legend, I was associated with a horse who was a legend”

On the 19th September 2011, the trainer most associated with Aintree Racecourse, Ginger McCain, died peacefully at his home, two days short of his 81st birthday.

A bronze bust of Ginger McCain has since been made and erected at the Aintree Racecourse.
